Martin Luther King Jr. had been giving the Civil Rights movement a lot of momentum due to his non violent speeches and acts. Four college students helped by sitting in a sit-in that only serves whites. Their goal was to sit there and wait to be served. This was to make a statement saying "I will not be seen as just a color". Because of these college students, Africans Americans did the same in other places as well. Around 1,500 were arrested but they didn't just get arrested for nothing. Soon, restaurants around the country abandoned their policies of segregation.
After segregation was considered illegal, a "showdown" was taken place three years after the Supreme Court made the decision on segregation. African American students known as the Little Rock Nine where kept from going to school by the governor of Arkansas. When a federal judge declared this action illegal, the troops that were used to keep the Little Rock Nine out of school were removed. The students had to go through the back door of the school and when word got out about this, around a thousand citizens stormed school grounds. This was broadcasted all across the country and Eisenhower had to act upon this situation and provided armed guards to keep an eye on the Little Rock Nine.
