Civil Rights Movements Begins
- The Civil Rights Movement is primarily in the 1960’s
- However, it gains momentum in the 1950’s
- We’re putting ALL of the CRM in the 1960’s, even though some elements will go back to the 50’s, and see some 50’s presidents like Eisenhower
- Background: Civil War
- The Civil War (1860-1864) was fought between the North (no slavery) and the south (slavery)
- Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation which freed the slaves
- The North won, and slavery was abolished
- Background: Amendments
- Right after the Civil War, three Amendments were added to the US Constitution
- 13th: Outlawed slavery everywhere
- 14th: Gave citizenship to anyone born in the US, and equal treatment
